Tools to Scan for AI Generated Images and Text AKA Deepfakes

For many reasons we need more tools to be able to scan for AI generated content.

What are you looking at? Is it real?!

AI generated content is becoming easier to use and implement. This could be used to create a funny meme, convince you of a false fact, or even in some cases cheat in some manner. There are some free services that could be used to check for AI generated text and images. The two sites are below and I will give some advice and list some of the pit falls of looking for AI generated content.

You will need to create an account, dont worry there are no terms and no privacy policy this service is free from the University of Buffalo!

A picture of the website after the login screen. This has an area to tell you the supported file types which are .jpg, .jpeg, .mp4, .bmp, .tif, .nef, .raf, .avi, .mov, .flac, .wav, .mp3. The other side has the detector selection portion. Below is the do you think it's real or fake and you choose I don't know, Real, or Fake. A Box asking for any additional information. Submit button, then an option to share data with the website's owner.

You drag and drop your photo on the left side, and select what type of selector you wish to test the image with. This part could take some time, as there are many different detector types and some may not detect an image. For our demo we will choose the top option first for detector and click submit at the bottom.

After clicking submit the webpage has the results pain with a meter. This meter is not filled and has 0.0% written in it. The screenshot has the Detector and its name and the details of the completeion of the job. The two buttons are Upload Another File and Check Submission History.

This time we will try again, and use all detectors! (This can take quite some time so if you find one you like continue to use that one!) Once you select a detector it will show as great on the webpage.

You can see that this service can help but is not 100% when detecting even one of the results error'd. The website states this should not be used to determine just help to determine if somehting is a Deepfake (AI Generated).

Next, we have one more site. This site is used to help detect fake text generatedby AI.

https://gptzero.me/

(I already populated the text with a story from chatgpt about a duck who knows karate.)

A screenshot of GPTzero webpage that has some text input from Chatgpt.

After you have your text populated you click on the  "Check Origin" button and our next screen will attempt to determine if the text was written by AI.

The results show that our story was thought to be written by AI (It was). During the demonstration the person changed a few words and resubmitted their chatgpt prompt and it found the text not to be AI at all. These tools have a hard time like we do when determining what is real or fake.

I would like to caution that these systems are easily tricked and should not be used to determine 100%. If you do use these tools, use them to help you determine not to do the determining for you. DO NOT input any personal information to any of these systems!!! That includes grades and rosters!!
