Description
This standard outlines the computer standards for staff-assigned computers at Phoenix College, as well as the model for funding the refresh of these computers.
Purpose
In the interest of ongoing transparency as well as offering choice to our departments, ITS is using this standard to put together what we believe to be an acceptable configuration for most faculty/staff computing needs, both from the perspective of Windows as well as Mac computers. Though the hardware standards will typically still be relevant in cases of one-time funding like grants or college yearly savings, the funding model would be different in these cases.
Standard/Policy
Hardware Standards
Phoenix College has established a standard of laptop computers assigned for all full-time staff. This includes a computer, monitor(s) (speakers, mic, and camera included), keyboard, and mouse.
In cases where there is a shared computer space (i.e. adjunct faculty work rooms, locations where multiple part-time workers will share a computer, etc.), (a) desktop computer(s) will be provided to be shared.
Faculty/Staff Windows Laptop
- Dell Latitude 54xx series laptop with the following configuration
- Screen: 14”
- Processor: Intel Core i5
- Memory: 16 GB
- Storage: 256 GB
- 3-year ProSupport Plus warranty
- Dell 24” Video Conferencing monitor
- Dell 24” P-series monitor
- Dell wired keyboard and mouse
Faculty/Staff Mac Laptop *
- Apple MacBook Air with the following configuration
- Screen: 13”
- Processor: Apple M3 (8 core CPU/8 core GPU)
- Memory: 8 GB
- Storage: 256 GB
- 3-year AppleCare+ warranty (no service fees)
- Dell 34” Video Conferencing monitor
- Apple-compatible keyboard and mouse
- * NOTE - If requesting this option, user must be able to use Mac OS and ensure any speciality software is compatible w/ Mac OS.
Shared Windows Desktop
- Dell Optiplex 74xx series All-In-One desktop with the following configuration
- Screen: 24”
- Processor: Intel Core i5
- Memory: 16 GB
- Storage: 256 GB
- 4-year ProSupport Plus warranty
- Dell wired keyboard and mouse
- 1 Additional Dell 24” P-series monitor
Purchasing and Refresh
Computer refresh happens on an established schedule (currently, this is approximately 5 years for all computer models) dependent on funding. The standard options above will be purchased for staff when new purchases are made, or a refresh happens. If there are additional needs that require a different model of computer, IT will work with the department to determine what is necessary and reasonable with available resources.
