Holidays Policy
Eligible employees in active pay status on the workday before and the workday after a holiday will be granted holiday compensation in the amount equivalent to their pay for a regularly scheduled workday on the day of the holiday observance. Holiday pay is automatically processed by payroll, so there is no need to enter the time into your timesheet.
Active Pay Status vs Leave Without Pay
Active pay status means the conditions under which an employee is eligible to receive pay and includes, but is not limited to, vacation leave, sick leave, and personal leave. Leave without pay (LWOP) is an approved temporary absence from duty in a non-pay status requested by an employee.
- For Example, if an eligible employee takes a sick or vacation day but has no remaining sick or vacation leave balance to apply to the day before or after a holiday, they are considered in "Leave Without Pay" status for that day(s) and would not qualify for the paid holiday that falls between those two days.
Regularly Scheduled Workday
The regularly scheduled workday is the time the employee is scheduled to work on a given day, including meal breaks of ½ - 1 hour.
- A 12-month employee who is regularly scheduled 40 hours per week will be paid for an 8-hour day during the regular academic year and a 10-hour day during the summer months despite their weekly daily scheduled hours.
- If an employee works an alternative work schedule, for example, 10 hours a day, 4 days a week during the academic year, they will still only be paid for 8 hours of holiday pay and will need to alter their schedule accordingly for the remaining 32 hours of accountability for that week.
- If an employee is working an alternative 8-hour, 5-days-a-week schedule during the summer months when MCCCD is on a 4x10 schedule, they will be paid for the 10 hours of holiday pay and will need to alter their schedule for the remaining 30 hours of accountability for that week.
- Eligible employees who are less than 1.0 FTE working at least 30 hours a week are paid a pro-rated portion of holiday pay based on their percentage of FTE.
- If, for example, an employee is scheduled to work 30 hours a week during the regular academic year, they will be paid the pro-rated amount of 6 hours of holiday pay.
Part-time employees, student workers, and some grant-funded positions (specially-funded employees) receive the day off without pay.
