Duo - How to Enroll a Hardware Security Key in Duo

Summary:

Duo works with hardware security keys such as Yubikey, using a modern, high-security connection standards. This ensures your login is fast and protected against unauthorized access.

Solution:

Step 1 — Start the Duo Protected Application  Login Process

  1. On your device, sign in to a Duo-protected app with your usual username and password.
    • If the page doesn't load correctly, try using an  Incognito or Private mode on your browser.
  2. When the Duo window appears, choose “Other options”.

  1. Next, select Manage Devices

  1. When prompted, confirm your identity with your existing method (push, SMS, phone call, passcode).

  1. Next, Select Add a device

Step 2 — Choose to Add a Security Key

  1. Duo will show a list of device types, select Security Key.

Step 3 — Insert or Activate Your Security Key

  1. Plug your Security Key into a USB port on your computer and click continue.

  1. When Duo prompts you, tap the metal contact or press the button on the Security Key, then click continue.

  1. If your browser ask for permission, click Allow.

Step 4 — Complete Enrollment

  1. Duo will confirm that the Security Key was registered. Your Security Key is now enrolled.

 

Using Your Security Key After Enrollment

When Duo prompts to authenticate during your account login:

  1. Select Security Key.

  1. Insert your Security Key in a USB port on your computer.
  2. If you are using the touch or biometric security key, touch the metal contact with your finger used to register when prompted. All others, follow the on-screen prompt to login.

Click “Yes, this is my device” to complete the login.

That’s it, no phone required.
