Traveling with Campus or Personal Devices: Tips for Secure Access

Traveling can be stressful, especially when trying to stay connected. Whether you're using a campus-issued device or your personal device, here are some important tips to help you access Maricopa resources securely — especially when using Duo two-factor authentication.

📍 Traveling Within the United States

  • Your campus-issued device should connect to Maricopa resources wherever Wi-Fi is available.

  • Campus devices have pre-installed VPN or Global Connect. Ensure you connect to Global Connect before you travel to make it functional. If Global Connect is not installed, you can install it from the device’s Software Center located on the desktop view. A VPN helps protect your data and access restricted content while traveling.

  • Maricopa supports Eduroam, a secure Wi-Fi network used by many colleges and universities.

Connect to Eduroam using your MEID@maricopa.edu and password.

🔐 Using a VPN Internationally
A VPN helps protect your data and access restricted content while traveling. Here's how to use one:

  1. Choose a Reliable VPN Provider
    Recommended options: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark.

  2. Install the VPN App
Download and install the app on your laptop, phone, or tablet.

  3. Connect to a Server
Select a server in your home country for best access to familiar content.

  4. Secure Your Browsing
VPNs encrypt your data, making public Wi-Fi safer and bypassing geo-restrictions.

  5. Check Local VPN Laws
Some countries (e.g., China, UAE, Russia) restrict VPN use. Research local regulations before connecting.

🔐 Duo Two-Factor Authentication While Traveling
To ensure secure access to Maricopa systems while abroad, plan ahead with these Duo options:
1. Duo Mobile App

  • Install the app on your smartphone or tablet before traveling.
  • Use the “Enter a passcode” option on the login screen.
  • Open the app, tap the key icon, and enter the generated code.
  • ✅ Works without cell or Wi-Fi signal.

2. Security Key FOB

  • Purchase a key fob before travel (available via bookstore or Amazon).
  • Recommended models used by Maricopa
    - Feitian ePass FIDO2 USB-A
    - Yubico Yubikey FIDO USB-A or USB-C
  • Press the button on the fob to approve.
  • ✅ No cell or Wi-Fi needed.

3. Internet-Based Phone Number

  • Set up a service like Google Voice before traveling.
  • Enroll the number in Duo and use the “Call Me” option to authenticate.
  • ⚠️ Requires Wi-Fi access.
  • 📱 Charges may apply.

4. International Phone Numbers

  • Duo supports international numbers, but text options may be limited.
  • Use Duo Push or phone call options instead.
  • Format your number using E.164:
Example (UK): Local number 07911-123456 → Duo format: +447911123456
  • 📱 Charges may apply based on your carrier.

5. Enroll a Backup Device

  • Add a second device (tablet or backup phone) to Duo before your trip.
  • This ensures access if your primary device is lost or unavailable.
